Top Ten Tuesday: Character Traits I Love!

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. As I feel most comfortable with smaller numbers, I’ll be making a top 5 instead.

Today we’ll be covering 5 character traits I adore in books!

5. Overdramatic af

This summer, I discovered that I love when characters are overdramatic to the point of amusement — usually to the annoyance of another character in their story. The two best examples of this I can give are Howl from Howl’s Moving Castle and Anne from Anne of Green Gables. The stuff that came out of Anne’s mouth whenever she felt like an injustice has been done to her absolutely killed me. I started quoting them to my best friends. And don’t even get me started on Howl’s hair fiasco.

I… would probably do the same thing, whoops

4. Seemingly having their shit together

You know those characters that are super organized and at least 78365929 things to do and you wonder how they manage to hold it all together? They don’t. But that doesn’t mean they’re not trying! Usually I see those characters on the side, but reading Don’t Date Rosa Santos let me get into the head of Rosa, whose weapon of choice is a bullet journal and some optimism. It was good to see her reasoning behind trying to take everything on and how it affects her. It was also good to see someone who carries a journal everywhere because, same.

I, too, am constantly tired.

3. Characters that can make me drop the book because I’m laughing too hard

Who doesn’t love the funny one? Apparently, people who make horror films, because they’ll always die and I get attached every single time knowing this. But in books, I get to spend more time with them and enjoy every second of the ride. Whether it be because of memes or their sarcastic humor, funny characters are the ones I want full on trilogies about. The most recent one to steal my heart was Alex from Red, White & Royal BlueThat boy…. he’s like a touch of that overdramatic flair, except with pride and sarcasm thrown in. His comments about Henry when they were still rivals get me every time, but my favorite is about his dog: “Who names a dog David? He sounds like a tax attorney.”

Not a book, I know, but Stiles Stilinski from Teen Wolf is the number one example of this character in my heart.

2. Morally corrupt villains that will not hesitate to stab you

Okay, I guess it’s time to get a little controversial. I haven’t read the Shadow & Bone series (yet!), but I know I’m absolutely going to be a Darkling stan. There’s a lot of talk around him, usually about how horrible he is and the like. The more I hear about him, honestly, the more I love him already. Those characters that are irredeemable are always some of my faves. Since I don’t have a bookish example for this, I’m just going to bring up my number one fave: Unknown from the game Mystic Messenger. If you’ve played the game and completed every single route and After Ending, you’ll know the full backstory of the character I’m referring to, but even then, I’m specifically referring to Unknown. That boy is so horribly troubled. I love him with my entire heart (in any form, not just his most evil which happens to be as Unknown).

As Ash would say, stab me, Emo Jesus

1. Soft characters, but especially boys

This is going to be a complete 180 from my last answer, but I love love love soft boys. The cute & shy smiles, the utmost care with which they interact with basically anybody, the way their hearts are so incredibly full of love — I would die for them. My favorite soft boy is my boyfriend because he’s the softest of them all is Jihoon from Wicked Fox. The way he interacts with his grandmother and all of the women in his neighborhood!!! The way he takes care of Miyoung in the quietest of ways!!! His troublemaker façade doesn’t fool anybody. We all know he’s the sweetest boy to ever grace the streets of Seoul. Unlike the villains, soft characters who harbor pain don’t let it affect them the same way, and instead give as much love to the world as they can.

I would die for Midoriya and you’re lying if you think you wouldn’t, too.

That’s it for today! Let me know what your favorite character traits are and if we share any! See you next time~ 💗
